Asbestos was used in the manufacture of many building materials up until the mid 1980’s when it’s use was banned by the Government.

Having building products in your home that contain asbestos is not usually a risk.  The risk involved begins once the materials containing asbestos are disturbed and the asbestos fibres are released into the environment.  This can happen while repair work or renovation work is being carried out.

If you are going to be undertaking repairs or renovations and your home was built prior to 1990, it is the law in British Columbia that an assessment be carried out prior to work commencing to identify any building materials that contain asbestos which may be disturbed during the repair or renovation work. Materials found to contain asbestos must be removed in accordance with Worksafe B.C. regulations.
